What is hypnosis? One definition is that hypnosis is "induction of belief through suggestion". Another definition is, "believed-in imagination". In hypnosis we access the subconscious and unconscious mind, which make up around 90% of the mind. This is where all memories, feelings and emotions, and past programming live. By accessing these parts of the mind we can make powerful and lasting changes with hypnotic suggestions, for example, "you are calm, you are safe, you are secure" and "you are now feeling full after eating only half as much food as before", etc. The suggestions, once accepted by the client, make it easy and effortlessly to live as if they are true, and they become true! Many people don't realize that they are hypnotized by television, printed ads, and even such things as driving. Have you ever driven right past your destination because you were daydreaming and driving on "auto-pilot"? That is a form of hypnotic state. Television commercials showing rich, beautiful, successful people drinking a certain brand of soft drink are hypnotizing the viewers to believe that if they drink that brand, they, too, will become like the people on the commercials. Nothing could be further from the truth!
What is self hypnosis? Many people say that all hypnosis is self hypnosis. Self hypnosis means that a person is making suggestions to himself/herself and believing and achieving the suggestions. Affirmations are a form of self hypnosis and can be positive or negative. Some examples are saying, "I am creating a beautiful day!" or, "This day sucks!" Whichever one you say and believe gains power. That is why it's important to encourage yourself.
Is hypnosis dangerous? No! Hypnosis is completely safe and very beneficial. It is all natural, drug free, chemical free, and has positive side effects! You will not tell your secrets unless you want to and it's a part of your treatment. You will not stand up on your chair and cluck like a chicken unless you have requested that! Many people have seen hypnosis stage shows where people go up on stage and do silly things. Those people have all volunteered to do that and they know what to expect - that they are going to be silly. You will not "get stuck" in hypnosis! It's important to choose a trained, experienced, moral, and ethical hypnotist and get to know and trust that person enough that you are comfortable with them. I am such a person. It's my goal to empower my clients!
What is a hypnosis session like? In a private hypnosis session, the client has asked for help in making some kind of change in their life and discusses that with the hypnotist. The hypnotist then decides on the suggestions that will help the client achieve that change. The client relaxes and the hypnotist gives the suggestions to the client's subconscious mind. At the end of the session people usually feel fantastic, as if they've just had the most restorative nap! After the session they start to notice the positive changes in their outlook on life and find themselves making the changes they wanted to make when they decided to use hypnosis as a tool for their lives. Sometimes a hypnosis session is used to uncover and remove emotional blocks from the past, such as using food for comfort because their mother and grandmother gave them sweets when they had problems as a child. Sometimes hypnosis is used to find memories, such as where you put that lost object. It is a very powerful and wonderful process that can be helpful in almost an infinite variety of ways.
What makes guided hypnotic meditation different from all the other meditations being offered at wellness centers? In our guided hypnotic meditations, a hypnotic reverie is induced (a day-dreamy state of mind, such as when one gazes out the window) and then a standard set of generally helpful suggestions are given. For example, the upcoming session is about increasing self confidence and focus. Everyone can benefit from that! This is different from a private hypnosis session because in a private session the suggestions are customized for the client's specific needs. In a non-hypnotic guided meditation, the participant enjoys guided imagery and there are no suggestions for specific change, just a pleasant experience. This is why our guided hypnotic meditation sessions are so valuable! Because the suggestions are not customized, these sessions are very affordable.
